Australian Content for Early Years

Image

Last week UOW launched  the Animal Alphabet Adventures and interactive whiteboard resource kit for the early years. The kit has been produced as part of a Community Engagement grant provided by the Office of Advancement for the University of Wollongong. tp://www.uow.edu.au/about/community/cegs/UOW135392.html

Animal Alphabet Adventures is a tool to explore interactive whiteboard resources with Australian content for preschool aged children. The project lead by Dr Holly Tootell and design lead Grant Elmers works well with Letter of the Week programs or animal interest projects.

The project was concerned that high quality Australian content should be available for the growing number of Early Years Centres.

The resource is very simple in order to provide a starting point for Early Years educators who are new to using interactive whiteboards. The resource is flexible enough to enable educators to innovate on the resource by adding more functionality from their SMART Boards.

All the letters are both upper case and lower case and the Notebooks include interactive spaces for brainstorming words starting with the featured letter. There are also links to other resources eg ABC “Splash”, http://splash.abc.net.au/resources

providing basic facts about the animals.

Digital content and SMART Boards enhances the learning of early years students. For more information contact j.wood@electroboard.com.au

Image

Over 500 students across Australia were able to meet Chris Nunn, the Chef de Mission for the Australian Paralympic Winter Team  competing in Sochi from March 7-16. Chris engaged students from schools across Australia via a video conferencing session showing them where the team would compete and introducing them to the six alpine skiers and the three snowboarders heading to the Russian city.

The 2014 Australian Paralympic Winter Team members representing Australia in Alpine skiing are:

Christian Geiger (guide for Jessica Gallagher) – Bright, VIC
Mitchell Gourley – Geelong, VIC
Toby Kane – South Melbourne, VIC
Victoria Pendergast – Gosford, NSW
Melissa Perrine – Welby, NSW
Andrew Bor (guide for Melissa Perrine) – Tugun, QLD
Cameron Rahles-Rahbula – Geelong, VIC

Our team members for Snowboard cross are:

Using the SMART Board  and Bridgit software Chris showed the students where Sochi was on a world map, photos of the team and the equipment they will use. He explained the effort and commitment of these athletes to the students who were obviously inspired and asked many questions to understand more deeply the challenges the athletes face.

Using video conferencing Chris was able to speak to primary and high schools from Victoria and NSW as well as home schoolers from the Barossa Valley in South Australia.

Just wanted to say how much we LOVED the Virtual Classroom!! I am so encouraged!!
Worked like a charm and was such great info, Chris was great!
I think this is such an exciting opportunity for Homeschoolers,

Students from Cobram Special School also watched the event and their teacher commented:

WOW !! That was fantastic our students are now buzzing around the school. What a wonderful opportunity.

Sydney Olympic Park hosts a range of significant video conferencing events and are leaders in using these technologies for inspirational activities so that  teachers can take their students beyond the walls of their classrooms.
